GOD’S 13 ATTRIBUTES OF MERCY in His Forgiveness of Sins – Rabbi Michael Skobac

In this lecture, Rabbi Michael Skobac will examine how the Torah, in a critical passage, describes the awesome mercy and loving kindness of the Almighty God.

For centuries, Christians have tried to compare what they consider to be the wrathful Deity of the Hebrew Bible to the loving and merciful savior of their scriptures. This, of course, displays a total lack of understanding of the Biblical G-d.

God’s 13 Attributes of Mercy are among the most powerful and transformative teachings in the Torah, [the Five Books of Moses] affecting all of mankind. Revealed to Moses after the sin of the Golden Calf, these attributes form the foundation of Jewish prayer, repentance, and Divine compassion.

In this lecture, Rabbi Skobac explores the original passage in Exodus 34:6–7, where God proclaims His attributes of mercy. We will examine how Judaism understands Divine justice and compassion as unified expressions of Hashem’s perfection and appreciate the awesome mercy and loving kindness of the Almighty God.

Far from portraying a wrathful deity, the Torah presents a God who is infinitely patient, compassionate, and committed to forgiveness when humanity turns back through teshuvah (repentance).

These attributes are central to the Selichot prayers, the Yom Kippur service, but most importantly, our daily prayer life in our personal relationship with HaShem. God’s Thirteen Attributes of Mercy have shaped the Jewish understanding of Divine mercy for over three millennia.

In this lecture, you will discover:
• The meaning of each of God’s 13 Attributes of Mercy
• Why compassion and justice are not contradictions in Torah theology
• How these attributes guide personal repentance and spiritual growth on a daily basis
This presentation reflects a classical Jewish perspective rooted in Torah and the great Sages.
