WAS JESUS A HIGH PRIEST? Refuting a Christian Claim with Rabbi Michael Skobac
The Hebrew Scriptures paint a clear picture of what the Messiah will be and what the world will look like when he is revealed. Based upon these criteria, it is obvious that Jesus if Nazareth was not the messiah. As a result of this failure, believers had to fashion a new Messianic concept that could accommodate a dead messiah. This makeover was accomplished by claiming that Jesus died on the cross as an atonement for those who believe in him.
As a result of this new “job-description” the Christian scriptures repeatedly portray Jesus as a High Priest. This, of course, is highly problematic. The traditional Messiah is a descendant of King David from the tribe of Judah. The priests were from the tribe of Levi. In order to overcome this problem, Christians assert that the Messiah could be both a king and a priest.
